About the Project

The Low Water Crossings website is a research project from the Department of Geography at Texas State University-San Marcos to examine collaborative mapping, data collection, and Volunteered Geographic Information. All of the contributed information comes from volunteers.

The goals of the project are:

  • to collect data about low water crossings in central Texas, which we hope to use to alert citizens of these risks and dangers;
  • to examine how contributors use collaborative mapping projects and examine issues such as locational and thematic accuracy, motivations, and social aspects of collaborative projects;
  • to examine how collaborative mapping can be used as an instructional technique in the classroom.
